Get A Local ID

We cannot stress the importance of getting yourself a local ID card. A regional ID speeds up the process of applying for a driving test, and makes it easy to access a number of services across the country.

State-Issued ID by State/Territory

New South Wales - Photo Card

Victoria - Proof of Age Card

Queensland - Photo ID Card

Western Australia - Photo Card

State-Issued ID by State/Territory

South Australia - Proof of Age Card

Tasmania - Proof of Age Card

ACT - Proof of Age Card

NT - Evidence of Age Card

The process across states is pretty much standardized. You need to meet eligibility requirements (age restrictions vary by state), fill out an application form, ensure you can provide identification documents and pay the respective fee.

Providing these identification documents is the hardest part as one of these categories will ask you for a LOCALLY issued ID. So before proceeding to get a photo ID and/or a driver’s licence, my recommendation is to get yourself a bank account. Get a bank debit card or credit card, because this will serve as a form of ID Proof at your local Department of Transport office.

Please see the following to determine what documents you require based on your state or territory. You will be required to provide unique identifying documentation under multiple categories. See what documents are acceptable under EACH category/list. This will help you determine if you need a bank card or not.

New South Wales

NSW Proof Of Identity

Western Australia

WA Proof Of Identity

South Australia

SA Proof Of Identity

Australian Capital Territory

ACT Proof Of Identity

Australian Capital Territory

ACT Proof Of Residency

Northern Territory

NT Proof Of Identity

Aside from a bank card, you can also get a mobile phone plan with a local SIM. This allows you to have a local number and your monthly statement (even paperless works) which shows your local address.

For students and visa holders who have been sponsored by employers, their respective letters should make applying for a local ID much simpler. However, if you are immigrating as a spouse, then you will most likely need to have a joint bank account with your spouse, as well as a telephone bill that displays your address.

Lastly, apply for a Medicare Card, as this will always work as a Proof of Identity. More information at Apply For Healthcare.

Getting A Driver's Licence

Once you have a Photo Identification Card, the process to get your driver’s licence is much easier. The process involves getting a learner's permit, P1, P2, and then a full license. There is always a theory test and practical assessments.Transferring your international licence is fairly simple – you need to visit your local Department of Transport and they will guide you on how long you can drive on that licence before getting an Australian driving licence. Our recommendation is to get your driver’s licence as soon as possible, as local IDs bring a lot of credibility to your profile.

Whether you are getting your first driver’s licence or transferring your international licence, there is a LOT of free information on theory tests and registered schools for driving tests. Please see the respective Transport website, we have listed them below. If you are a driving school interested in having your information included below, kindly email us at support@immigratingtoaustralia.com.
